Rules

  • A buoy is deemed as “rounded” if the boat’s charted track between the previous and next rounded buoys (or final position at the end of the time limit), when pulled tight as if a string, causes the track (string) to noticeably change direction around the buoy.
  • The starting buoy is “Pluckington” and does not count as a rounded buoy
  • Only charted navigation buoys count (Lateral, Cardinal and Special Markers) and not beacons. These buoys must be in the mersey and be south of New Brighton Lighthouse (Brazil Buoy does not count)
  • Only wind and tide can be used to move the boat, unless Colregs and the engine is used to avoid collision (this should be declared on what buoy that was)
  • Evidence should be submitted to the Race Committee. For example, GPS Plotter, electronic devices and/or apps such as AIS records.
  • Boats can anchor, take moor or take ground (if suitable) during the challenge.
  • During the challenge boats can communicate as normal
  • International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCAS), and harbor bye-laws must always be followed. Mersey VTS (channel 12) should be tuned and skippers are reminded that the Mersey and its channels as ‘Narrow Channels’ for commercial vessels and boats should impede their passage. Failure to adhere to these regs will invalidate the attempted challenge.
  • The final decision always rests with the LYC Sailing committee
