Grapevine Printed Archive 1996-2009

The clubs printed achieves of Grapevine date back to 1996, when the club was called Liverpool Marina Yacht Club. The magazines were printed and were full of reports from the management team and various committees, which are 1-3 pages in length, news pieces which are 1-2 paragraphs in length and articles which are 1 – 4 pages in length.

The contents of the first edition published in January 1996 are: -

Reports: -

  • Commodore’s report – Gordon Dewar
  • Rear Commodores report – Steve Critchley
  • Sailing Committee Notes – Neil Thomas (Vice Commodore)
  • Race Control Bulletin

News: -

  • Sailing down under
  • Internet News
  • “Yachts and Yachting” plug
  • Membership renewals
  • Merengue Craze Sweeps Marina
  • Planned Cruises
  • Lottery
  • Gratuitous act of unprovoked politeness

Articles: -

  • Au Revoir Liverpool – Chris Formby
  • France in Brief – Gill Catton
  • Racing Enhancement (Including top quality protests) – Alastair Soame
  • LBSA News

The achieves continue with another edition published in May 1996 before they settle down to an edition every season. Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

One of our members has had the opportunity of looking through some of the archives and has found it quite educational, for example: -

In the second edition of Grapevine, the publication of the rock channel waypoints was first seen. These are now published in the diary and on the Rock Channel page:-http://lyc.org.uk/rock-channel.html

By the start of 1997 the club was officially called Liverpool Yacht Club and the word Marina was dropped from our name.

Seeing names like Neil Thomas, Alastair Soane and Vinny Reynolds crop up time and time again makes them really appreciate the breadth of experience that members of the club have

The ideas of trips, that were organised by the House Committee were quite varied and in the Summer of 1997 edition a skiing trip was proposed.

In the Autumn 1998 edition, a charity had the mad cap idea of getting teams together to row or sail boats made if paper across the Mersey.

In the Winter of 1998/99 a debate was in progress about the collection of a £2 fee for non-members. At the end of the debate it was decided that the then Membership secretary should collect the fee.

There were a lot more cruises organised, most were to where Regatta's were going on, or an alternative way of enjoying where a race was going, but some were just sail for 24hours because we think this is just a great idea

There were “Letters to the Editor” Now we do have emails, but letters seem more official

If you wish to look at the archive for yourself then please contact pr@lyc.org.uk and somebody will be in touch to help with your request.
