Dinghy Training

Sailing at Crosby Lake
Sailing at Crosby Lake

Members of Liverpool Yacht Club, attended the very first course to be run at Lakeside Adventure Centre, by the Dinghy section. The course was for the RYA Level 1 & 2 sailing course.

It was held over a period of 3 days on 11th December 2016, 15th and 22nd January 2017 at Crosby Lakeside Centre. The first day was a Level 1 assessment day, checking that everyone knew the basics of sailing so that the course could be run as the two day Level 2 sailing course.

The course was run by our very own members Dave Forshaw & Jan Demelweek with assistance from Alan Jones of the RYA, Steve, Sharon and Sarah from Liverpool Yacht club.

The assessment day went well, but for many people on the course, it was the first time that they had been out on a Bahia, so it was interesting learning how to steer the Dinghy over the three point course.

On the 15th January, there was 15 knots of wind, so sailing out on the lake was called off, however the course still went ahead with all the theory being conducted in one of the classrooms at Crosby. The theory included:-

  • Knots, although in dinghies only six knots are required.
  • Safety equipment,
  • Clothing and Personal equipment,
  • Rigging the Dinghy, especially how to rig the dinghy with reefs in.
  • How to trim the sails,
  • Points of sail,
  • the five essentials,
  • how to avoid collisions and
  • the weather.

Where it was practical to do so, like rigging the dinghy and how to use the tell tails to obtain good sail shape, these were conducted outside.

The weather was much kinder to the group on the 22nd, so the group managed to put all they had learnt into practice out on the Dinghies. It was however very cold, so only a buoy was thrown in the water for the man overboard practise. All the members on the course obtained their qualification that will be approved by Lakeside Adventure Centre as a RYA centre.
